speech therapy

I provide speech (aka voice) therapy for patients with diagnoses ranging from vocal fold masses (cysts, polyps, nodules), Muscle Tension Dysphonia, scar, reflux laryngitis, vocal fold paresis and paralysis, to neurologic disorders including spasmodic dysphonia and myasthenia gravis.  Therapy patients must first receive a laryngeal examination and be diagnosed by a laryngologist in order to be referred for speech therapy to ensure that the treatment I provide is appropriate.  If you’re not sure whether you need to be seen by a doctor to be referred for therapy or you just need some speech or voice training, contact me and I can advise you.

(If you’re wondering what metal straws have to do with speech therapy, I’ll be happy to show you just how useful they are!)

singing voice

As a Singing Voice Specialist, I work with injured singing voices to help singers re-establish their technique and safely return to avocational or professional performance after a disruption due to illness or injury.  This includes helping singers through post-operative recovery if surgical intervention is necessary.  If you already had a voice teacher prior to coming for help with an injury, my aim is to prepare you to return to their studio.

I also give voice lessons, with a dual focus on technical mastery along with song interpretation and delivery.  My students range from teenagers to adults, and perform a range of styles.

Some of my favorite moments working with singers come when the invitation to explore a song as an actor results in even greater vocal freedom and ease.

Having a clear, strong, and expressive speaking voice can help anyone in the pursuit of professional or personal success and satisfaction.  Whether you’re a classroom teacher, a customer service specialist, or the parent of a teenager, if you want to maximize the quality, strength, or expressiveness of your speaking voice, I can design a training program based on your vocal  demands.

If you’re an actor, I can provide acting voice training, including work on Shakespearean texts.  Movement-based Fitzmaurice Voicework is also available.

There’s no question that some professions are more vocally demanding than others, and career training sometimes falls short. Think about it: every actor in a bachelor’s degree program gets a Speech & Voice class, but how many Education majors receive the training they need to prepare them for the extreme vocal demands they’ll face?

F.A.Q.

If you can’t find your answer here, feel free to contact me.

I do participate with some insurance plans.  Because every individual’s plan can have different benefits, the best way to find out is to contact me and let me research your benefits before we meet.

You’ll need to make an appointment to have a laryngeal examination by a laryngologist or an ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat doctor).  I recommend someone who specializes in voice.  If you need help choosing a doctor, contact me and I can assist you.

CCC-SLP stands for Certificate of Clinical Competence.  It’s the nationally recognized professional credential that is awarded by the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA).  I hold the CCC-SLP and I’m licensed by the state of Pennsylvania.

SVS stands for Singing Voice Specialist, which is a voice teacher  trained to collaborate with medical professionals in the treatment of injured voices.

Michelle Eugene is the stage name I use in both of the professional actors unions I belong to: AEA and SAG-AFTRA.  I use it interchangeably with Michelle Horman (my legal name and the name on my SLP license), depending on the circumstances.

I do!  I offer acting training, monologue and audition coaching, and “Acting your Song” coaching.
